Cast Your Vote! The Best Light Saber Battles

Craig the Rocket Scientist Craig the Rocket Scientist September 12, 2012

I don’t like to get political, but I’m going to ask you, dear readers, to vote today. The topic we are voting on is as relevant as it is riveting. It was a topic which a coworker and I squared off on for over half an hour and dragged two 4-person cubicles into the fray.  The topic as you can of course guess is . . . Which Star Wars Trilogy had the best light saber battles?

I’m not going to tell you which end of this debate I was on since that could color judgment so let me lay out the two arguments that were made:

Episodes 1-3

What’s better than one light saber? Two light sabers! What’s better than two light sabers? Double sided light sabers! The duels in E1-3 are the finest in the series. Instead of old robot men and young boys we see Sith and Jedi in their prime taking full advantage of their respective force powers in ways we didn’t think possible. The battles were blindingly fast in settings of epic proportion. The amazing acrobatics and sword play by Master Qui-Gon and Darth Maul in E1 is possibly the finest in the series.

Episodes 4-6

Can you beat a classic? Of course not, but that’s not why the “real Star Wars” should get your vote. While these battles may have been slower paced it was because they were more significant. In E6 every saber swing was filled with emotion, anger, anguish, and confliction were themes not explored in dialogue but in the crackling of energy swords. Is there a more iconic moment in sci-fi then when the newly dehanded Luke is filled with horror that the monster he has set out to destroy is really his father and is now offering him an alliance?

As our lead engineer remarked “This conversation is so stupid yet completely enthralling.” We all know Han shot first that isn’t up for debate. We also can agree that taken as a whole E4-6 are better than E1-3. These are not the issues. Please, I ask you to be respectful and no flaming.

Round 1… Fight!
